SAN Urges Tinubu to Free Nnamdi Kanu in Honour of Late Elders

KEY POINTS

  • According to Senior Advocate Chukwuma-Machukwu Ume, President Tinubu should release Nnamdi Kanu because it would honor the late national leaders.
  • According to him the situation involving Nnamdi Kanu reflects poor diplomatic communication as much as it does legal matters.
  • The governmental institution must abide by court verdicts while supporting a national unity drive.

Senior Advocate Chukwuma-Machukwu Ume has petitioned President Bola Tinubu to free Mazi Nnamdi Kanu because of deceased elder statesmen Chief Edwin Clerk and Pa Ayo Adebanjo.

A letter to President Tinubu demonstrates that Ume views Kanu’s predicament as an expression of political and national misunderstandings which demand Federal Government strategic rethinking.

The late national figures led by Chief Mbazurike Amaechi and Prof. George Obiozo and Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife and Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyawu pushed for the release of Kanu among their efforts to restore peace in Nigeria.

According to Ume, the late political figures’ voices continue to cry out for national statesmanship as well as legal fairness even though they have passed away and Kanu now represents a prisoner of conscience.

Rule of law and diplomacy over force

Ume asked the authorities to revise their approach to national unity policy because federalism should foster universal participation and equitable administration instead of upholding ethnic dominance. Sustainable nation-building depends on diplomacy combined with respect for legal standards since he rejects the use of force.

The Court of Appeal released Kanu from prison through its ruling because governmental authorities hold an obligation to maintain judicial determinations as well as follow international obligations made by Nigeria.

The decision to liberate Mazi Nnamdi Kanu represents political wisdom that demonstrates strong leadership rather than positional weakness according to Ume.
