The African Democratic Congress has called on Peter Obi to take a clear stance on whether he intends to join its coalition ahead of the 2027 general election.
The party stressed that it won’t pressure him into membership, even though he holds influence within the bloc.
Obi raised concerns on Wednesday about what he viewed as cracks within the coalition. He pointed to disagreements on zoning and rotation of key offices.
He also expressed trust in senior political figures involved in the talks, including former Senate President David Mark and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
Zoning ‘Not on the Table Yet’
ADC spokesperson Bolaji Abdullahi responded that the coalition has not reached a point where zoning should be discussed.
He explained that its priority is to present Nigerians with a credible alternative, not to divide energy on issues that will come later.
He urged Obi to reach a firm decision about joining the coalition instead of waiting for zoning commitments.
Abdullahi noted that the party values Obi’s contributions but stressed that the coalition’s development agenda comes first. He argued that zoning cannot be the basis for Obi’s assessment at this stage.
Coalition Dismisses Claims of Instability
Abdullahi pushed back against Obi’s earlier remark describing the coalition as unstable. He insisted that the movement remains strong and pointed to its rapid nationwide expansion.
He highlighted that the coalition now has offices in more than 27 states despite having no elected officeholders.
He encouraged Obi to play a more active role in building party structures, especially in Anambra State, as the coalition prepares for the 2027 cycle.
