Enugu Man Murders Mother, Sister, Buries Them in Backyard

Published on

A young man from Enugu State has been arrested for allegedly killing his mother and sister and burying them in a shallow grave in their backyard.

The suspect, identified as Somadina Orji, is from Igboariam in Anambra State but lived with his family in Umuagu Inyi, in the Oji River Local Government area of Enugu State.

According to a report by Punch, the late mother, Mrs Charity Orji, was a native of Inyi but married in Igboariam. She had been staying in her family house with her children for some years.

However, her son Somadina, who reportedly deals in hard drugs, had been having issues with her over his behavior for some time. He decided to kill her and his sister, Miss Ukamaka Orji, who had been missing for two weeks before the incident.

How The Crime Was Discovered

The crime came to light on Monday, December 4, 2023, when the younger brother of the suspect returned home and could not find his mother. He suspected something was wrong and raised an alarm.

When the villagers gathered at the compound, they interrogated Somadina, who confessed that he had killed his mother and sister and buried them in the backyard.

He also revealed the location of the grave, where the police exhumed the remains of the victims and deposited them at the mortuary.

The police spokesperson in Enugu State, DSP Daniel Ndukwe, confirmed the incident and said the suspect was in custody and the case was under investigation.

He added that the suspect would be prosecuted once the investigation was concluded.

The Impact of Hard Drugs on The Community

The gruesome murder has shocked and saddened the residents of the Inyi community, who condemned the act and called for justice.

A community leader in Inyi, Mr Ben Obi, said the use of hard drugs in the area was alarming and blamed the absence of governing bodies such as the traditional ruler, town union and president-general for the situation.

He said the suspect had earlier tried to attack his younger brother and the mother had reported him to the kingsmen to chase him away from the house.

He also said the mother was a hardworking woman who sold fufu to feed her family.

He appealed to the government and the anti-drug agency in Oji River to help them curb the menace of drug abuse in their community.

The Need for Awareness and Prevention

The tragic case of Somadina Orji and his family is one of the many examples of how drug abuse can destroy lives and families.

Drug abuse can impair the mental and physical health of users, increase the risk of infectious diseases, violence, crime, and accidents, and reduce productivity and educational attainment.

To prevent and reduce drug abuse, there is a need for more awareness and education on the dangers and effects of drugs, as well as effective treatment and rehabilitation services for drug users.

There is also a need for stronger law enforcement and regulation of drug supply and distribution, as well as more collaboration and coordination among stakeholders and communities.

By working together, we can create a safer and healthier society for everyone.
