Senate Picks Tony Nwoye as Minority Whip

KEY POINTS

  • The Senate appointed Tony Nwoye as Minority Whip following the defection of Osita Ngwu to the APC.
  • Nwoye, now a member of the ADC, was unanimously selected by the minority caucus.
  • Multiple defections; including those of Anthony Yaro and Aliyu Wadada highlight ongoing political realignments within the Senate.

The Nigerian Senate has appointed Tony Nwoye, the lawmaker representing Anambra North, as the new Minority Whip. His emergence followed a unanimous decision by members of the minority caucus during Wednesday’s sitting.

Nwoye takes over the role after a reshuffle triggered by recent political defections within the upper legislative chamber.

The position became vacant after Osita Ngwu, who represented Enugu West, defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

His exit from the opposition party altered the composition of the minority leadership, prompting the caucus to quickly select a replacement to maintain structure and coordination.

Nwoye’s Political Shift to ADC

Interestingly, Nwoye himself has experienced recent political movement. Originally elected to the Senate in 2023 under the Labour Party (LP), he defected in March to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he now plays a leading role within the minority bloc.

His appointment signals growing influence for the ADC within the opposition ranks of the Senate.

The Senate session also witnessed further defections. Anthony Yaro, representing Gombe South, announced his exit from the PDP to the APC, citing unresolved internal crises within the opposition party.

Similarly, Aliyu Wadada of Nasarawa West officially left the Social Democratic Party (SDP) to join the APC.

Wadada’s move comes shortly after Abdullahi Sule publicly endorsed him as his preferred successor for the Nasarawa State governorship race. The governor noted that the endorsement followed wide consultations with key stakeholders across the state and beyond.
