KEY POINTS

  • First batch of about 270 Nigerians evacuated from South Africa is expected to arrive in Lagos on Thursday morning.
  • The Federal Government is fully funding the repatriation following xenophobic attacks and related safety concerns.
  • Screening, documentation, and diplomatic coordination delayed the flight as authorities finalized arrangements with South Africa.

The first group of Nigerians repatriated from South Africa following recent xenophobic attacks is expected to arrive at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos on Thursday morning.

The evacuation exercise is being coordinated by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in collaboration with other agencies, including the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA).

According to a statement by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, the returnees will depart Johannesburg aboard an Air Peace aircraft from O.R. Tambo International Airport on Wednesday night and are expected in Lagos at about 5 a.m.

The government confirmed that it is fully funding the evacuation, with arrangements already in place to receive and support the returnees upon arrival.

Officials said the returnees will undergo documentation and profiling before being assisted and reunited with their families.

The ministry noted that the flight was initially scheduled for Monday but was rescheduled to Wednesday due to logistical adjustments and ongoing coordination with South African authorities.

Screening and Documentation Delayed Departure

Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu explained that the delay was necessary to complete screening and documentation processes.

She said over 1,000 Nigerians in South Africa were screened, though the final list of evacuees continues to change as verification progresses.

Nigeria’s High Commission in Pretoria also negotiated waivers with South African authorities to ensure that individuals with immigration-related issues would not be detained but allowed to return voluntarily.

Officials confirmed that about 270 Nigerians are expected to be part of the first evacuation group.

The exercise is being carried out in coordination with multiple agencies to ensure safe and orderly repatriation.

Government authorities say the move follows renewed concerns over attacks targeting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa.

The Federal Government has reiterated its commitment to the safety and welfare of Nigerians living in South Africa, assuring that diplomatic engagements are ongoing to address the situation.

Officials say efforts will continue with South African authorities to prevent further violence and ensure affected citizens are protected.
