  • The governor said the vandalism did not compromise the bridge’s structural integrity.
  • Residents were urged to report suspicious activities and help protect public infrastructure.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has inspected a section of the bridge at Vin-Niger, along the Lagos-Badagry Expressway in Amuwo-Odofin, following reports that some components of the structure had been vandalised.

The governor visited the location to assess the extent of the damage and determine whether the incident posed any danger to motorists, commuters and other road users who rely on the busy expressway.

After inspecting the affected section, Sanwo-Olu assured residents and motorists that the vandalism had not compromised the structural integrity or safety of the bridge.

According to the governor, the items targeted by suspected vandals were fittings that had been excavated and removed from the bridge.

While the incident raised concerns about the safety of the structure, Sanwo-Olu maintained that the removal of the fittings did not affect the bridge’s ability to safely carry traffic.

He nevertheless described the development as a serious concern, particularly because the destruction and theft of public infrastructure could have wider implications for public safety and the state’s investment in critical infrastructure.

Sanwo-Olu Warns Infrastructure Buyers, Sellers

The governor warned that the Lagos State Government would pursue those responsible for the vandalism.

He said the government’s efforts would not be limited to individuals who physically remove infrastructure components, but would also target those involved in purchasing and selling stolen public infrastructure materials.

Sanwo-Olu’s position underscores the government’s concern that the continued theft of public assets could encourage further vandalism if those who provide markets for stolen materials are not held accountable.

The governor also expressed concern over what he described as a growing pattern of vandalism across Festac Town and surrounding areas.

He specifically cited the destruction of drainage slabs and the theft of iron rods as examples of attacks on public infrastructure in the area.

According to him, such acts not only result in financial losses for the government but can also undermine the effectiveness of infrastructure designed to protect communities and improve the quality of life of residents.

The destruction of drainage infrastructure, for instance, could affect the proper flow of stormwater and potentially worsen flooding risks in affected communities.

Sanwo-Olu called on residents to take greater ownership of public infrastructure in their communities by remaining vigilant and promptly reporting suspicious activities to security agencies.

He stressed that government alone could not effectively protect every piece of public infrastructure without the cooperation of residents and community stakeholders.

The governor urged members of the public to report suspected acts of vandalism and other attempts to damage or steal government property.
