Nigeria’s federal government has appropriated 2.1 billion naira to revive the renal program at Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex in Ile-Ife, Osun State, the hospital’s chief medical director said, according to Vanguard.
John Okeniyi disclosed the figure Thursday at the grand finale of the hospital’s 50th anniversary celebration. He tied the planned revival to President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda for the health sector.
Renal program funding still to come
However, the money has yet to reach the hospital. Okeniyi said he expects that once the funds arrive and the hospital puts them to proper use, they will restore its renal replacement services and strengthen its capacity to care for kidney patients.
Thanking Tinubu for the allocation, he said that once the hospital gets the money, “the renal replacement programme will be fully back.”
Calls for wider health support
Meanwhile, Iyiola Omisore, a former Osun State deputy governor, called for greater backing for health initiatives. He said health is essential to life and urged individuals and stakeholders to support efforts that make a real difference in people’s lives.
Also speaking, Seyi Tinubu, the president’s son, said through his representative, Lawal Umar, that health care success should be judged by its impact on ordinary Nigerians. Rather than policies and buildings, he said, the real test is whether people can access care, afford medicines and recover. Umar chairs the Tinubu/Shettima Grassroots Mobilisation.
