Ortom Calls on Bello to Face EFCC Investigation

Published on

In a surprising turn of events, former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom publicly urged Yahaya Bello, the immediate past governor of Kogi State, to turn himself in to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) amid ongoing corruption investigations.

The call to action came during a thanksgiving service held at the Redeemed Christian Church of God in Makurdi. The service, organized by Ortom’s former appointees, celebrated his 63rd birthday.

Ortom’s statement directly addressed Bello’s recent absence from court hearings related to the EFCC’s investigation. He argued that evading the EFCC is not only inappropriate but also tarnishes the reputation of former governors.

“If you are called upon to clarify issues regarding your time in office, don’t hide,” Ortom said. “The EFCC is simply carrying out its lawful duties. There’s no need to resist arrest or go into hiding. Go there and explain yourself. They are human beings just like you and me.”

Ortom revealed that he had attempted to personally contact Bello by phone but was unsuccessful. He reiterated his message, urging Bello to present himself before the EFCC regardless of his current location.

Bello’s Court Absence Raises Eyebrows

Yahaya Bello’s truancy from court hearings connected to the EFCC’s investigation has drawn considerable attention. In April 2024, the EFCC was forced to withdraw its appeal after the court ruled in Bello’s favor regarding an arrest warrant.

The anti-graft agency has remained tight-lipped on whether they will pursue further legal action.

Ortom’s public statement underscores the heightened public scrutiny surrounding former governors in Nigeria. The EFCC has aggressively pursued corruption investigations against several former state leaders in recent years. This focus on accountability reflects a growing public demand for transparency and good governance in the country.

Ortom’s Motivations Spark Speculation

While Ortom’s motivations for urging Bello to cooperate with the EFCC remain unclear, some political analysts believe it could be a strategically timed move. Ortom, a vocal critic of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party to which Bello belongs, may be aiming to capitalize on the situation to score political points.

Others suggest Ortom’s statement might be a genuine call for transparency and accountability, regardless of political affiliation.

Impact on Bello’s Political Future Uncertain

The long-term implications of the EFCC investigation and Ortom’s comments on Bello’s political future are yet to be determined. Bello has not publicly responded to Ortom’s statement, and it remains to be seen if he will heed the former governor’s advice and appear before the EFCC.

This situation is likely to continue unfolding in the coming weeks and months. Nigerians are watching closely as the EFCC’s investigation progresses and Bello’s next move becomes clear.
