Police Warn of Foreign Mercenaries Plotting to Hijack Protests

Published on

The Nigerian Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has raised an alarm over intelligence reports indicating that foreign mercenaries have been recruited to hijack the planned nationwide protests against economic hardship. Speaking in Abuja, IGP Egbetokun urged Nigerians to exercise caution and reconsider participating in any protest to prevent potential violence and damage.

Intelligence Reports Reveal Sinister Plans

The IGP disclosed that the police have been closely monitoring various groups’ plans to protest. While some groups advocate for peaceful demonstrations, others are allegedly pushing for violent actions, inspired by recent events in Kenya. “We have credible intelligence on foreign mercenaries’ involvement in this planned protest,” Egbetokun said, emphasizing the importance of discerning the true motives behind the protests.

He noted that while peaceful assembly is a constitutional right, there are concerns about individuals with violent intentions masquerading as peaceful protesters. The IGP commended those who have decided not to participate in the protests due to these concerns and warned that enemies of the country might be manipulating the situation.

Guidelines for Peaceful Protests

To ensure public safety and order, IGP Egbetokun called on groups intending to protest to submit specific details to their respective Commissioners of Police. These details include proposed protest routes, assembly points, the expected duration of the protest, names and contact details of protest leaders, and measures to prevent hijacking by criminal elements.

By providing this information, the police can deploy adequate personnel and resources to ensure a peaceful protest. The IGP also highlighted the need for clear communication channels between protest leaders and the police to address any arising concerns or issues. He emphasized the importance of minimizing the risk of violence, property damage, or other criminal activities during protests.

Ensuring Safety and Order

The IGP assured that the police are prepared to protect lawful protesters and maintain order. He urged protesters to cooperate with law enforcement and adhere to the guidelines provided. “If groups fail to comply with the guidelines, it means they don’t mean well for the country,” Egbetokun warned, indicating that the police are ready to respond to any non-compliant groups.

Reflecting on past protests, such as the EndSARS movement, Egbetokun highlighted the severe consequences of violent protests, including the destruction of police stations and public property. Moreover, he urged Nigerians to be cautious and not allow the country to be misled into chaos and destruction.

The IGP concluded by issuing a stern warning to clandestine groups planning to exploit the protests, stating, “We will not tolerate the killing of any Nigerian in the guise of protest.”
