Residents in Nawfia, Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State, scattered for safety on Sunday after gunmen opened fire near the Afor Market Junction.

The attack left several people dead, although the exact number of victims remains unclear.

Witnesses described a sudden burst of gunshots that sent people running. Bodies were seen on the ground as community members tried to escape the gunfire.

Residents Recount Moments of Fear

Those who live near the busy market area shared tense accounts of the incident. One resident reported that the assailants stormed the junction and opened fire without warning. People fled in different directions while others were hit in the chaos.

Another eyewitness near the scene explained that the attackers moved in with precision and fired at anyone in sight.

Video clips circulating online show residents racing away as lifeless bodies lay on the roadside.

Community Leaders Respond

The President General of the Nawfia Progressive Union, Chief Daniel Okoye, released a statement expressing deep shock.

He reported that security agencies have been alerted and that investigations began immediately after the attack.

Okoye condemned the violence and urged residents to stay calm during the ongoing security operations. He offered condolences to affected families and pledged support as authorities work to restore order.

Police Launch Investigation

The Anambra State Police Command could not be reached for an official update. However, a police source familiar with the case confirmed that detectives are tracking the gunmen.

The source described the attack as brutal and assured residents that efforts are underway to identify and arrest those involved.
