KEY POINTS

  • Heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua was injured in a car accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway in Nigeria.

  • Two British men traveling with Joshua were killed in the collision.

  • Road safety officials cited excessive speed and wrongful overtaking as the likely cause.

British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua survived a car accident in Nigeria on Monday that resulted in the deaths of two fellow British travellers.

The crash occurred near Sagamu along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. According to the Federal Road Safety Corps, the Lexus SUV carrying him lost control while attempting to overtake another vehicle and hit a stationary truck. Police confirmed Joshua, who was sitting in the back, sustained minor injuries.

Olusegun Ogungbemide, a spokesperson for the road safety agency, said preliminary findings point to excessive speed and a faulty overtaking maneuver as causes. Five men were involved in the incident, he said. Two died, one was injured and two escaped unharmed.

Witness Adeniyi Orojo said Joshua was traveling with three others. The passenger beside the driver and the person seated next to Joshua died at the scene.

Ogun State Condoles with Families of the Deceased

The Ogun State Government offered condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Joshua a swift recovery. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also expressed sympathy in a social media post.

Joshua, who has family roots in the Sagamu area, was in Nigeria after a recent boxing victory in Miami. The fighter remains under medical observation at an undisclosed hospital.

The damaged vehicle has been moved to a local traffic division office as the investigation continues. The accident has prompted fresh warnings from officials for drivers to avoid speed and dangerous passes, especially during the busy holiday travel period.
