The diaspora arm of the Coalition for the Protection of Democracy (COPDEM) has raised concerns about what it described as escalating intimidation and security threats against former presidential candidate Peter Obi.

In a statement signed by Dr. Ben Chukwu, Director of COPDEM in Diaspora and Convener of Professionals for Good Governance and Social Justice, the group said recent incidents and political rhetoric directed at Obi have moved beyond the bounds of routine democratic competition.

The COPDEM diaspora Peter Obi warning follows reports of security advisories and alleged restrictions on the former candidate’s political engagements in some states.

COPDEM Diaspora Peter Obi Warning

The coalition alleged that Obi has faced security warnings and constraints aimed at limiting his activities. It also referenced what it described as a security incident in Edo State involving Obi’s convoy, claiming armed individuals attacked his movement.

The group did not provide independent evidence but called for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances surrounding the reported incident.

COPDEM further accused the ruling All Progressives Congress of fostering hostility toward opposition figures. The party had not publicly responded to the specific claims at the time of reporting.

Request for Investigation and Monitoring

The group asked security authorities, such as the Department of State Services, to look into those they think may have known about the potential threats before.

It asked the government to make sure that all political actors, no matter what party they belong to, have the same level of security protection. It also asked the international community to keep a careful eye on events.

The COPDEM diaspora Peter Obi warning portrayed the situation as a possible threat to the stability of democracy, also saying that escalating political tensions need close monitoring and adherence to constitutional protections.
