Federal lawmaker Ikenga Ugochinyere has commended the newly appointed acting national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Mohammed Yayari, for taking immediate steps to address party issues just hours after assuming office.

Ugochinyere praised Yayari’s approach as a much-needed step toward revitalizing the PDP and preparing it for the 2027 elections.

Early reforms spark optimism

In a statement from Abuja, Ugochinyere, who serves as the spokesperson for the opposition coalition in the House of Representatives, emphasized that Yayari’s quick response demonstrates a deep understanding of the challenges the party faces.

According to Vanguard, he noted that the new chairman’s actions have sparked renewed optimism within the PDP, offering hope for unity and improved electoral performance.

Ugochinyere highlighted that the chairman’s rapid engagement signals a commitment to restoring internal democracy and promoting cohesion within the party. “The national chairman understands the urgent need to restore peace and refocus the PDP on its core values,” Ugochinyere remarked.

The lawmaker added that his group within the House would support Yayari’s leadership, expressing confidence that the acting chairman will implement key reforms necessary to strengthen the party ahead of future elections.

Leadership changes and party strategy

Yayari was appointed acting chairman by a faction of the PDP following the suspension of two top officials—the party’s national publicity secretary, Debo Ologunagba, and its national legal adviser.

Ugochinyere stressed that the swift leadership transition is critical to addressing longstanding issues within the PDP.

The new chairman’s first actions align with the party’s strategic goal of maintaining internal discipline while pursuing broader reforms to position itself as a leading opposition force.

Ugochinyere reaffirmed that the party’s lawmakers will actively support efforts to solidify the PDP’s role in Nigeria’s political landscape.
